CopQuest History

CopQuest started from simple beginnings in the infancy of electronic commerce. Back in 1985, the co-founder started a software company and sold it in 1992. He had a solid background in computer science but always had a passion to serve in law enforcement. So he pursued his passion and became a police officer for a small city in California.

As a police officer he found it frustrating to find and purchase products he and his colleagues needed to make the job more productive, safer, and easier. In the early 1990’s there was very little e-commerce. If you needed to replace a piece of leather gear or buy a new and more powerful flashlight, you either had to drive to a store in a major metropolitan area or buy your product from a catalog.

As world wide web was coming of age, and with his background in information technology, he studied the concepts of e-commerce in his spare time with the idea of potentially starting an on-line business that catered to law enforcement. If the beat was slow, sometimes he'd read articles and take notes under the map light in his patrol car at 3 a.m. When it came time to actually start the business, he had friends in the computer peripheral business that were willing to allocate a portion of their brick-and-mortar location in Newbury Park, CA to house products and support the venture. They formed a partnership under an existing corporation and the CopQuest division of Voler Corporation was born.

The charter concept behind CopQuest was to provide an on-line presence offering the highest quality products, selling at a reasonable price and always with excellent customer service. The tiny division started with a moderate investment in gloves, flashlights, multitools and duty gear. The initial CopQuest.com web site went live on August 21, 1999. There were a few initial orders, but these were all made by phone or walk-ins from customers that found CopQuest in the phone book. It wasn't until December 1, 1999 at 6pm when the first internet order was received. It was a $22.95 order for leather search gloves with a Virginia destination. It was at that moment when CopQuest officially became an established e-commerce business!

After the agonizing wait for the first internet order, it certainly appeared that the flood gates opened. CopQuest grew rapidly through the early 2000's. As a private company, CopQuest not only survied the dot-com crash of 2002, but experienced rapid growth. They filled professional staff positions, deployed new e-commerce concepts and added some great suppliers. In 2004 the co-founding partners sold off their their company assets and focused on evolving CopQuest.com. In 2007 the company was re-incorporated as CopQuest, Inc and moved from their cramped Newbury Park location to a new and much larger facility in Camarillo, CA.

Since then, the business has employed many talented individuals dedicated to serving customers and helping fuel the continued growth of the company. As part of this growth, CopQuest has diversified into new areas serving law enforcement. While now a mature and much more robust e-commerce company, we understand that it is the relationship with our customers that is the foundation of our success. We endeavor to never lose sight of our original charter:
